Trading
First and foremost, trading is not a requirement of ownership. A team can make as many or as few trades as it wishes.
The trading deadline is July 31st. This is built into the game and cannot be changed.
Trading rules:
  • Five players per team may be traded at a time.
  • No more than 4 teams may be involved in the transaction.
  • Draft picks may be traded.
  • A player may be traded for any amount of cash - the team sending the cash must have this amount in its reserve.
  • Players may be traded for a player(s) to be named later. If this is done, a list of no more than 10 players is to be submitted at the time of trade for the receiving team to chose from. This list will be e-mailed directly to the commissioner and to no one else!! These players are also protected from release and being traded until this transaction is completed. The transaction must be completed in 60 game calendar days.
  • Franchise players may not be traded (see below).
  • Cash traded will come out of the team cash reserve.
  • A player does not have to be involved in the trade.  This means that a draft picks may be traded for each other or cash.
  • A team may not make a team that it cannot afford.  If your team is not slated to make enough money and have enough cash reserve to pay the player, the trade will be voided.

The specific on trading draft picks:

  • You may only trade picks for the next seasons draft (e.g.. if it is 2004 you may only trade 2005 picks)
  • You may trade any pick that your team has the rights to.  This includes any picks that you have received from other trades.
  • Once a pick is traded, your team no longer has any rights to it.
  • When you trade a pick, you need to note which round(s) you are specifically trading.  These can be any from 1st to 10th.

Once a trade is completed, it should be posted on the trade message board and confirmed by each team involved. The trade should be posted in this fashion --

Team Sending -- Players, Money, PTBN, Draft Picks -- Team Receiving

This format is especially important, as multi-team trades are possible.

Example for multi-team trade:

  • Team A -- Player 1, $5 million -- Team B
  • Team A -- Player 2 -- Team C
  • Team B -- Players 3&4 -- Team A
  • Team C -- Player 5, PTBN -- Team B
Waivers
A team can place any player on waivers at any time. To do so, the players name is placed on the waiver wire. To clear waivers, the player must go unclaimed for 48 hours or until the next sim (if the waiver is posted at least 24 hours before the next sim), whichever comes first. Once a player has cleared, he may be released outright, the releasing team paying 10% of the players remaining contract. Once the player is released, he may be signed by any team, including the releasing team.
If the player does not clear, and is claimed by another team, the team may pull the player back from waivers. If this is done, the player may not be waived again for 60 calendar game days.
If the player is not pulled back, the claiming team receives the player and accepts the remainder of his contract. If two or more teams claim the player in the clearance period:
  • The team with the worst record gets the player, unless
  • Both teams have an identical record, then the player goes to the team in the same league, unless
  • Both teams are in the same league, then the player goes to the team in the same division, unless
  • Both or neither team is the same division, then the player goes the team with the worst record from the previous season.

If this still does not resolve which team receive the player, the teams will then enter a blind offer for the player, the higher offer winning. The players current salary is the minimum offer required.

If the player is waived in the first 30 days of the season, the previous season's records are used.

In-Season Free Agency & Contract Extensions
A free agent may be signed during the season by posting on the In-Season Free Agent board. These free agents may only be signed to one-year contracts.

The team has rights to signing the player exclusively if no other team posts within 24 hours or the next sim (if the post was at least 12 hours before the sim), whichever comes first.  If a second team posts within the time period, the player's contract will be sent to blind bid.  This is still limited to the one year contract.

Contract extensions will be posted to the boards as well. A contract extension will only be offered to players in the final year of their contract. When the offer is submitted, the players response will be sent back to the owner. If he refuses, you can try again at a later date, up until the first day after the championship.

Off-Season Free Agency
The 30 day free agency in the off-season will be done in 5 sets of 6. Each team will submit blind offers for the players desired through an e-mail to the commissioner. The commissioner will enter these offers and sim 6 days. The league file will then be updated with any signings and desires for more money or years. Bear in mind these sims will be occurring 6 days at a time, so take initial bids very seriously. A player may decide to sign with another quickly if another team gives a desirable enough contract.

Bids will be sent in with a three step bid.  The first bid will be offered to the player first.  The second will be offered to the player if outbid by another team.  The third will be offered as a last resort bid, if still outbid.

NOTE: Grossly high, 1-yr contracts will not be offered to players!! This pretty much includes anything over $20 million. If you are going to offer this much to a player, it needs to be for at least 2 years. If this is taken advantage of, then the minimum year for high contracts will go up.

These sims will be run every day for five days.

Marquee Players:  Every off-season, the league office will label certain players Marquee Players.  This label is for Fan Interest Purposes only.  There are two levels of Marquee Players - A and B.  When these players are signed by a team other than the player's current team, the team's Fan Interest will go up.  For A level it will go up 20 points, for B it will go up 10.  For the team losing the player, their Fan Interest will go down this number of points.  A team can sign as many or as little Marquee Players as it chooses.

Franchise Player (optional)
The BPLA is committed to ensuring that every team maintains at least one identifiable star on the team's roster, even for the teams that may not be able to afford to do so. In the interest of this, every team has the option to declare one member of its 25-man roster a Franchise Player.
How this works --
  • The league will pay 33% of the players salary up to $5 million/yr.
  • This player must be given a 7 year contract.
  • This player has a permanent no-trade clause.
  • This player must remain on the team's 25 man roster or disabled list.
  • The player can never be placed on waivers.
  • The player can be no older than 35 and no younger than 26 on April 1st of the year that he is named Franchise Player.
  • The player must have been with current team no less than 3 seasons.

In the event that a Franchise player retires, whether to injury or personal choice, the team may name another player if it choses to do so.
Once a Franchise Player's contract expires, the team may renew his status as Franchise Player (if he meet age requirements), choose another, or refrain from having one at all.
