Top 5 Signs a New Season is Underway

1.  Richmond is in 1st Place
One of the worst teams in the league last season, after one month has the second best record overall, the best in its Conference.  Led by its incredible pitching staff, the team is on a six game winning streak and won 9 of its last eleven.  If the team can stay consistent (its biggest problem in 2003) then the defending champs Hartford have a big problem on their hands.
2Alex Rodriguez is again being paid $25 million to do what $5 million could buy
He started last season slow, did manage to hit a few homers along the way, but basically put up terrible numbers for what he is capable of.  Some blamed it on a new league, adjustments, lack of concern.  But now that 2004 is a month underway and he is again hitting .235 with 5 homers, the Jazz's season just got 136 games longer.
3.  Nobody is playing where they are supposed to be
In Portland, last year's regular third baseman is DH'ing.  In Richmond, a pitcher who appeared in 37 games in relief for the Linemen is the teams #4 starter.  Half of Indy is in other cities.  Players are popping up all over the place in new cities, new positions and new levels of play.
4.  Somebody besides Weitz held the home run lead - for a while
For about 2 1/2 weeks of the season, someone other that Hiram Weitz held the lead in home runs -- until he decided to erupt over the last two week of April.  He hit homers in eight consecutive games (which is of course a modern day record) hitting 13 in those games.  Friggin' sick, people, friggin' sick.
5.  10 games back feels ain't so bad
In September, if you are 10 games back, your season is about to over in a few weeks.  In August, 10 games back means you have to crank it up a notch.  July, its just a small hump to get over.  Right now, it's just a silly number that can be changed in the course of a week.
